While Giza’s main attractions have always been the pyramids and sphinx, and although the Step Pyramid towers over the Saqqara plateau, most of its treasures have only been revealed by archaeology over the last two centuries. For early travellers it was more a place to explore decorated underground ‘grottoes’ and find mummies. Just imagine the thrill of exploration in those early days, but also how many ancient artefacts were removed as souvenirs…
